Hole of the Week 3: The Preserve - #5

Ah yes - a shotmaker's hole. I usually claim to appreciate this type of hole but I don't know that I've ever scored less than double bogey on this hole. It is a well designed hole and perhaps it would be easier if one would play it a bit more often but it kicks my ass every year.

It's not like you have it made if you reach the green in regulation. It is a severely sloped two-tier green - a very easy three or four putt for any Cahoona not taking a very generous gimme. But we all know that's what Cahoonas do best!

Speaking of gimmes, I played my first actual golf tournament last week in about 20 years. (At any rate, it was the first time I'd played where the ball actually needs to fall in the hole before you can write your bogey down)

Anyway, all those years of Cahoona power-gimmees came crashing down as I realized I'd totally forgotten how to make a three (or four) foot putt. Windy day on the Vermillion Bluff's nasty, hard, multiple-breaking greens.

Five three putts and a four putt on the front
nine later, I added up a 48, bought a six-pack at the turn and, honest to God, kept drinking until we CLOSED CAREY'S at 2 a.m.

Great tourney. Screw putting . . .
